At first glance, it sounds appealing… the overseas money isn’t being taxed here anyway, so who really loses if it’s brought back tax free advice?
The thing is, though, if companies having access to such money really wanted to help put America back to work, they could just as easily have pulled the money back in by borrowing it, and the interest rate paid on it would be a lot less that the tax rate, under our current tax laws.
I have to wonder, therefore, how motivated companies would be in putting people here back to work if they can pull the money back in tax-free. Would it be worth taxpayer’s money for Congress to spend time changing the tax laws? And you just know there’ll be special interest pork thrown into the mix.
